This was my submission for the Tomb Raider Reborn Contest. I drew the different layers of the picture with colored pencils from Caran d'ache and I also used a normal eraser and some pencils. I used Adobe Photoshop to paste the different parts of the picture together.
This project required a lot of patience and endurance. I had to work on it between school and it cost me at least half my daily sleep, many hours in which I should actually have been studying for school and doing homework, so that, I guess, also had a bad effect on my grades, I tried to replace every little bit of my free time with working on this and hardly had time to eat or drink. I didn't tell anyone about what I was working on, not even my parents. I knew I couldn't win because there were just so many absolutely stunning entries that I almost entirely lost my motivation, since I was almost the only one, who was doing something with pencils. I just thought I simply HAD to submit something as a matter of principle. I watched Tomb Raider game play walkthrough video after video and interviews and behind-the-scenes and all the trailers, and looked at dozens of pictures because I wanted it so much to be perfect.
So, I live in Germany and that is why I had about six hours more, because of the time zone difference and I had to have the work uploaded by 11:59:59 PM on March 14th (US time, Los Angeles). I thought that's great so I had until, like, 6 AM on Friday, which is practically exactly when I have to get up and get ready for school, so as soon as I came home on that Thursday I sat down and worked on the work until about 3 AM, and did the final pasting together on Photoshop and at around 4 AM I was done and wanted to submit it. First I was confused because I couldn't find the contest site anymore, which I thought was odd, since they were very precise about the deadline and I even had a clock on the internet where it would show what time it was in LA and I still had at least for hours. So I tried just loading it up on my profile and I would see if that would work if I just placed it in the according category. And since I live in a very small town where the internet connection isn't all that great I waited and waited and waited. For about 40 minutes. Then I gave up and tried again. I fell asleep after about 40 minutes and when I woke up in the morning, it said something like "We are sorry but there has been an error with the Uploading". And I had to rush to school, knowing that with just a few words all my hopes had been destroyed. I cursed myself and my computer and the whole world and thought I would just forget about everything and move on.
So now I am showing you my work, which has been my life for the past couple of weeks and very much hope you like it. I am now glad I did it and I don't regret anything. I learned a lot in the process and am proud of it. I know, it's not perfect and I wish the very best for the winners of this contest. I guess they deserve it more than I do, because I haven't known Tomb Raider since, maybe one or two years ago, while so many of the artists who also took part have had a great connection to Lara Croft and Tomb Raider for many years and a lot of them most likely spent a lot more time on their work than I did. So I wish them all the luck that I missed out on, because there are some totally awesome works that I saw and I really hope that they win something.
